Project Journey: Lab Testing Company Implements Cloud Migration Strategy

A large US-based company that is a leader in Food, Safety, Cosmetics, OTC, and supplements laboratory testing looked to implement a cloud migration strategy when faced with looming infrastructure upgrades for their current on-premises computing, storage, and network needs. Additionally, they wanted to provide better availability for their business and the applications that IT was responsible for hosting.

The Challenge

With the company experiencing hyper-growth through an M&A strategy, they faced a unique set of challenges on top of the normal considerations companies encounter when migrating to the cloud.

This is because, within their vertical, they have instrumentation that requires physical connections, in some cases to legacy systems. The physical element of this model changes the dynamic of how applications will communicate.

Another challenge was the number of legacy applications that needed to be upgraded and rewritten as cloud-native during the same time period. This added to the complexity of our project.

Cloud Migration Strategy & Roadmap

RKON was hired to build a five-year cloud migration strategy leveraging the RKON Cloud Journey Roadmap™. RKON evaluated legacy applications that could be written as cloud-native.

Azure IaaS

RKON looked at one of the main Lab Instrumentation Software systems (LIMS), which could not initially be ported to cloud-native. Therefore, it needed to be moved off-premises with a "rehost" model, where it was deployed in Azure IaaS on the latest version.

Interim Private Cloud

In other cases, as part of the company's cloud initiative, they evaluated leveraging RKON's private cloud as an interim location for specific legacy applications that were not the right fit for the public cloud.

This flexibility potentially allowed the company to still get out of the business of owning and operating their own hardware but also did not box them into a one-size-fits-all appraoch.

RKON is now providing a strategy for our client's evolution to cloud computing by executing RKON Cloud Journey Roadmap. RKON conducted major upgrades to the client's network in order to provide the necessary resiliency since core applications will now be hosted in a public and private cloud. RKON is also rebuilding legacy applications as cloud-native.RKON is additionally providing the initial development environment for the current LIMS in Azure. This organization is reaping the benefits of this strategy already. There is now a concise understanding of what their strategy will be over the next three years to ultimately enable the CIO's vision of the direction of the company.
